Wall Paintings

I have this year been experimenting with working without the physicality of the canvas, I like the freedom of working off of the strict structure of a rectangle, and working without the restraints of keeping in a compact space.  Working straight onto the wall gives a lot of flexibility of space, and is also linked to the idea of natural forms, the idea that mould can spread up walls, it gives me the freedom to express this freely.  The organic and natural shapes that I work with go together with working in an open space.

These are just some of the mould images I collected this year.  It was very experimental as the outcome was not  fully controlled.  I was really happy with the images as they showed so many interesting factors and from these images I loosely represented mould in my paintings, and drawings.

‘Untitled’ 1st year university work

This piece was produced while I was looking at microsopic surfaces.  I experimented with Using a microscope to look at random organic surfaces, Like leaves, grass, bark, nail, and hair.  From this I got a selection of quite abstract images.

Artist poem found on surfaces

‘’ My eye is drawn to surfaces and textures,

 beauty in abstraction,

repeated forms in nature and man-made structures.

In them, I see layers of time, history repeating itself,

 humankind’s resilience, a woman’s weathered face, and a man’s weaknesses.

 They are journals of history’’

Paintings done in foundation degree Art and Design

These paintings were for my foundation degree, and some are still being shown in Alton College.

I looked at lots of different textured surfaces including water surface, and organic or distressed surfaces, for this idea I explored how things change and everything goes through its own journey and cycle, and how the idea of surfaces can reflect a person’s age and changing life.  I am interested in the passing of time, and how surfaces can reflect that.  I was looking at the aesthetic quality of the surfaces.

My Artist Statement

My work is based on natural surfaces, at the moment I am looesly representing mould and decay. This could be a magnified image of a section of rotting tree, worn out pavement, rushing water, old worn out walls infected by mould, and other surfaces like this.  I am interested in nature  and the natural processof things.  I am capturing shapes and colours that I find from images or surfaces I have found.  I have recently moved from painting on canvas to working directly on to walls ceilings and the floor.  I am not using the physicallity of the canvas anymore as i like the freedom of not being resticted.  My work is looking at organic shapes and colours and the process of my paintings reflect natural forms and the actual process of mould.I think watching nature take over an area is a facinating and interesting thing,, and often quite beautiful, i want the audience also to reflect on these things, and how we shouldnt disconect our selves from nature, as it is such a temporary thing. In my process of painting on the wall, ceiling and floor it is also a very temporary thing, I am exploring the objectness of a painting and how painting can also be clased as a painting sculpture and instillation.
